Nocturne is one of two trio pieces I wrote for this project. I enjoy the orchestral quality of the piano and primarily use it to compose. The piano’s timbral subtleties really trigger the listener’s imagination. In this case, I was imagining the sleepless nights and hardship of someone living in a bad neighborhood. As she lies in bed, slowly drifting into sleep, she reflects on the daily troubles she sees in the neighborhood—drug dealers, fights, the sound of gunshots and police sirens.
I grew up in Baltimore, often staying with my grandparents downtown in a neighborhood called Park Heights. I could hear gunshots at night and saw fights and drugs from time to time as a kid. This experience cycled back around when I first moved to my block in Hamilton Heights six years ago. I noticed how some mothers were begging their kids to come home and stay out of trouble. That feeling translated into the Cmin-maj7 b13 harmony used throughout the piece. The classical form of a nocturne was also fitting.
