about

Spice Planet refers to the primary setting of Frank Herbert’s 1965 science fiction novel Dune. The planet is called Arrakis and is informally referred to as “Dune,” because it’s essentially a desert. Despite its largely uninhabitable climates, Dune contains the most coveted resource in Herbert’s fictional universe—melange, or spice. Spice is used for everything ranging from medicinal benefits to fabrics, explosives, and even space travel. It’s also highly addictive and at the center of most regional conflicts.

I associated spice with our own dependence on fossil fuels, especially crude oil. The canon that starts and ends the piece is much like the delicate geopolitical balance we exist in our own world of energy-resource production and consumption. The balance can easily be thrown off and result in conflict, as shown by the more dissonant and chaotic bridge of the song.
